What is Metadata?

Metadata is cataloging. Yes!!! I said it. MARC is metadata. Although metadata can be so much more. It is slick, it goes with Web 2.0. MARC is a dinosaur and is understood by a religious following. Catalogers know how to catalog, using principles taught in Library school. But how can non-library schoolers, catalog and use metadata? Thus the controversy will continue.
